Lewis-Beck (1995) Aims to provide the statistical fundamentals that every data analyst needs in order to launch a quantitative research project. After a brief discussion of data gathering, univariate statistics (measures of central tendency and dispersion) are considered. Then measures of association (Pearson's r, tau, lambda) and significance testing are looked at and, finally, simple and multiple regression are developed. Formulas are provided but their interpretation in plain English is stressed.

Vogt, 2nd ed. (1999) Gives readers of research in the social and behavioral sciences an easy-to-use reference work for statistical concepts and methodological terms. also enables people to be informed consumers and critical readers of research works that otherwise might be inaccessible to them. As always, every definition is “nontechnical.” This means that definitions are written in ordinary English whenever possible, and they contain no formulas.

Sills, DL 2nd ed. (2008) Features new articles and biographies contributed by scholars from around the world. Includes fields that are emerging and maturing; highlights the expanding influence of economics in social science research.
